what soft launch actually is

unfinished thought #1

a visual diary for everything you're trying, becoming, and figuring out. no streaks. no numbers. no shame. just your photos and the side quests you embark on.

every app i've ever tried to use for self-improvement has asked me the same question, just dressed up differently.

did you hit your goal? how many days in a row? what's your streak?

i always eventually stopped opening them. not because i stopped caring about the thing i was trying (running, reading, making things, waking up earlier) but because the app made me feel like i was failing at it. like the point was the number, not the thing.

that gap between caring about something and feeling like you're doing it "right" is what soft launch is about.

the name is doing a lot of work

in tech, a soft launch is strategy, not failure. it's what you do when something isn't ready to be perfect yet. you ship it. you learn. you iterate.

i started thinking: what if we applied that logic to ourselves?

you're not a runner yet. you're soft launching running. you're not a cook yet. you're soft launching cooking at home. the "yet" stays, but the shame of not being there drops off completely.

because here's what nobody tells you about the early phase of anything: it's actually the most interesting part. you're figuring it out. you're trying things. you're taking photos of your sad first attempt at sourdough and your slightly-better second one. that phase doesn't need a streak. it needs a place to live.

what the app actually is

soft launch is a visual diary for everything you're trying, becoming, and figuring out.

you create a soft launch, a self-defined collection around anything you're exploring. a hobby, a feeling, a phase, a curiosity. you name it. you add photos. that's it.

no goals attached. no streak counting down. no number to hit. no reminder that you missed a day (because there are no days to miss).

you can soft launch anything: matcha making, movement, slow sundays, reading, cooking at home, 6am mornings. it can last a day or a year. there's no required duration, no checklist, no ending unless you want one.

the home screen is a canvas. your launches floating on white, each one a small cluster of your most recent photos. no borders. no progress bars. just your photos and a title.

it looks like a visual diary because that's what it is.

why "no numbers" is actually the hard design decision

most wellness apps are designed around measurement because measurement is what gets investors excited. you can chart it. you can a/b test notifications around it. you can send a push that says "you're 3 days from your best streak ever."

the problem is that the streak is not the point. the walk is the point. the book is the point. the matcha you made on a tuesday morning because you felt like it is the point.

when the metric becomes the goal, you start optimizing for the metric instead of the thing. you do the workout but hate it. you log the meal but don't enjoy it. the number goes up. the feeling doesn't.

soft launch has no streaks. ever. no targets. ever. no "you missed 3 days" because there are no days to miss.

the only thing it tracks is: here are the moments you thought were worth photographing. that's a very different kind of record.

the person this is for

i built this for the person who says i'm not a real ___.

not a real runner. not a real cook. not a real morning person. they want to be, but existing apps were built for people who already are. strava is for real runners. myfitnesspal is for people who've already decided. soft launch is for the in-between. the soft launch phase of becoming something.

it's for the recovering perfectionist who quits when they miss a day, because an all-or-nothing system has never once helped them do anything. it's for the person who just moved to a new city, started a new job, had a kid, changed careers, and is rebuilding their sense of self from scratch. quietly. without needing to announce it.

the emotional job isn't motivation. it's belonging. making someone feel like they already belong in the life they're building, not that they're failing to reach it.

why i'm documenting this in public

the app is in development. the instagram is live. i post my own soft launches every day, faceless, just photos and whatever i'm figuring out. and now there's this: unfinished thoughts, the blog where i write about building it.

i'm documenting the whole thing because the act of building soft launch is itself a soft launch. it's not finished. it's not perfect. i'm figuring it out.

that felt like it deserved to be said out loud.

if you've ever quit an app because it made you feel worse about yourself, this is for you. if you've ever stopped doing something you loved because you "fell off" and didn't know how to start again, this is for you. if you've ever been in a phase of life where you were trying a lot of things and none of them had a name yet, this is for you.

you're always soft launching a new version of yourself.

that's not a limitation. that's the whole point.
